Dr.-Ing. Roland Behrens
Fraunhofer IFF
Roland Behrens is a research at Fraunhofer IFF, where he has been working since 2009 after earning his diploma in Mechatronics from Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg. His work focuses on safety in collaborative robotics, with particular expertise in impact biomechanics and the digital safety technologies. He played a key role in several human-subject studies that contributed to the definition of new biomechanical thresholds used in international standards for collaborative robots. In 2018, he completed his Ph.D. at TU Ilmenau on the biomechanical effects of robot collisions.
Since 2024, he is leading the department “Human-Centered Systems” at Fraunhofer IFF, focusing on safety, knowledge transfer, and digital assistance systems in human-robot collaboration (HRC). Roland has been chair of ISO Working Group WG 8 (TC 299) since 2021, developing international standards for collaborative robots. He is also a long-standing member of the DIN working group on "Industrial Robot Safety."
